About the Position
The Curator collaborates with the Museum leadership team and Exhibition Committee on a long-range exhibition program and related curatorial activities. The ideal candidate oversees three floors of gallery space, from a large contemporary art gallery space on the third floor, as well as installations and gallery rotations on two other floors reflecting Armenian history and culture from the ancient period to the present, often in collaboration with Armenian scholars and artists/specialists. The exhibitions and permanent collection displays should align with institutional strategies and deliver an outstanding visitor experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Organizes exhibitions and writes texts, labels, and interpretive materials and programming that ensures audience engagement.
• Effectively manages the development and implementation of a long-range exhibition schedule, gallery installation, and occasional online exhibitions. Ensures overall programming is diverse and balanced and appeals to many audiences. Ensures that exhibitions and gallery installation continue to reflect the high standards and branding of the Armenian Museum and facilitate a meaningful experience for visitors.
• Oversees planning, administration, and operations in exhibition design and managing contracted specialists (ie. graphic designer, carpenter and painter, art installer when needed).
• Develops and monitors curatorial and exhibitions budgets and reviews exhibition contracts, agreements, and other administrative documents.
• Works closely with the Museum’s development team to advocate for funds that support a variety of initiatives, including exhibition sponsorship and naming opportunities.
• Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate or as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications
• Experience with curatorial, exhibitions, and operational functions in a museum environment.
• A creative and strategic thinker who contributes fresh and innovative ideas, while possessing strong operational and project management abilities.
• Advanced education in Art History, Visual Culture, or related Cultural or Curatorial discipline.
• Knowledge of Armenian Artists, both living and non-living is preferred, or a highly motivated desire to learn through networking, research, and collaboration with more experienced peers.
• Solid budget, project management, financial planning, and priority-setting skills.
• Outstanding verbal and written communications with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of constituencies.
• Knowledge of the Armenian Language and Armenian History is a plus, but not required.
• The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, able to work independently and as part of a team, and enthusiastic about our Mission to share Armenian culture and history with the world.
General Information
The salary range for this position is $70,000-plus per year commensurate with experience. Occasional travel may be required.
