Join us Thursday April 1, 2021 at 7:30 pm EST/4:30 pm PST for a unique live virtual presentation and discussion (via Zoom) of the earliest known Armenian sound recordings produced in the United States, as well as an exploration into the first decade or recorded sound spanning between 1909-1920. Through the collaborative efforts of the Armenian Museum and private collectors we present for the first time the full catalog of Mardiros Der Sarkis Tashjian and his brothers. Join us as we explore these long-forgotten tunes and hear stories about the creators of culture.
A specific selection of songs were assembled for this presentation. The artists we will present include: Mardiros Der Sarkis Tashjian, The Tashjian Brothers, Karekin Proodian, Armenag Shah-Mouradian, Torcom Bezazian, Nevart Dzeron Koshkarian and others!
A special thank you to Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives for providing the images of the brothers and their family!
This event is associated with the recently launched Sound Archive on our website, where we will feature a different artist or producer each month. The event is free, but registration is required. To register, please visit the Eventbrite page. For updates and more information, please join our Facebook Event.
About the presenter:
Harout Arakelian began collecting efforts less than ten years ago and was immediately inspired to attempt to collect as near a complete collection of Armenian music recorded on 78 rpm (shellac, 10” phonograph discs) as possible. Currently his collection is over 500 discs.
Due to a lack of available information Arakelian moved from just record collecting to include music research. His extensive knowledge has afforded him the opportunity to bring greater understanding and enthusiasm to the world of Armenian recordings and their history.
Arakelian's recent public speaking and projects include:
A series of music events titled “Armenian Music of America” at Abril Bookstore (2018-2019)
Guest lecturer at UCLA
Co-producer of Richard Hagopian & Family performance at Abril Bookstore
