A Conversation with Artists from "On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s-1990s”
Introduction
Joan Agajanian Quinn and her late husband Jack represent a key moment in the history of contemporary art, as Los Angeles came to symbolize an innovative and prolific brand of creative freedom. Few individuals have left such an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Southern California than Joan and Jack Quinn. Joan found herself both muse and promoter of several Southern California artists, while Jack used his skills as a prominent and influential attorney to help an array of emerging artists and their dealers navigate the worlds of law and business.
This exhibition highlights the couple’s collection primarily amassed from the 1970s to 1990s, a period rich in significance and defined by a unique spirit of anti-conformity, a play of new materials and a celebration of light and the California cool ethos. Much of the work was collected directly from the artists and has never changed hands or been shown publicly. Works in the exhibition will explore themes such as Ferus Group “Cool School,” Light and Space, Minimalism, Chicano Art, Pop Art, and international artists and influences.

Open Studio with GBH Arts Editor Jared Bowen
GBH Arts Editor Jared Bowen reviews our current exhibit and says, "On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s-1990s tells the story of how California artists adopted a maverick streak in the 1970s. They broke out of what was the norm in the art hotbeds of New York and Europe. Unlike artists in those places, the California artists played with light. Fortunately, they had friends and collectors like the Quinns to fuel this innovation."

‘On the Edge’: A lively West Coast collection lands in Watertown
An exhibition at the Armenian Museum of America celebrates the made-in-California collecting style of Joan Agajanian Quinn and her late husband, Jack
WATERTOWN — When he came to America, Oscar Wilde is supposed to have said to a customs officer, “I have nothing to declare except my genius.” Collectors have nothing to declare except their sensibility. Many, perhaps most, don’t have one. Joan Agajanian Quinn definitely does. Getting a handle on it is among the pleasures offered by “On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s-1990s from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection.” The length of that title is a bit daunting. It’s also fitting, since Quinn’s sensibility is nothing if not capacious. Also, she and her late husband collected a lot of art.

A Crash Course in Postwar LA Art
The rollicking energy of On the Edge, an exhibition of mostly Southern California artists of the 1970s through the 1090s from the Jack and Joan Quinn Family Collection, is only rivaled by the exuberance of its collector, Joan Agajanian Quinn. This vibrant art lover, in partnership with her [late husband] Jack Quinn, lived and entertained amongst layers of art, art objects, and Armenian rugs they amassed over their 56 years of marriage. Architectural critic Martin Filler called the collection “a crash course in postwar LA Art.”
